Overview
This guide walks new users through each stage of logging into Robinhood — creating an account, downloading the app (or using the website), signing in, enabling security, and recovering access if you get locked out. Follow the steps carefully and always protect your credentials.
Step 1 — Prepare Before You Login
Before you open the Robinhood app or website, make sure you have:
- A valid email address you control.
- Your mobile phone nearby (for SMS codes or authenticator apps).
- A strong, unique password ready—use a password manager if possible.
Tip: Never reuse passwords from other sites. A unique password prevents attackers from using leaked credentials elsewhere.
Step 2 — Install the Official App or Visit the Official Website
- Mobile: Open the Apple App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and search for Robinhood. Install the official app (publisher: Robinhood Markets, Inc.).
- Web: Visit robinhood.com in your browser — type the address directly instead of clicking unknown links.
Look for the official brand and app permissions. Fake apps sometimes mimic names; check the publisher and reviews.
Step 3 — Create an Account (New Users)
- Open the app or click Sign up on robinhood.com.
- Enter your legal name, email, and create a strong password (follow on-screen requirements).
- Verify your email by opening the message Robinhood sends and clicking the verification link.
- Provide required identity details (SSN last 4 usually, birthdate) to comply with regulatory rules—these are standard for brokerage accounts.
Expect identity verification — Robinhood must follow KYC (Know Your Customer) rules before you trade.
Step 4 — Log In (Returning Users)
- Open the Robinhood app or the website and click Log in.
- Enter the email address you used to sign up and your password.
- If prompted, complete two-factor authentication (2FA): enter the code sent by SMS or from your authenticator app.
- Once authenticated, you'll land on your account dashboard.
Security reminder: If you receive an unexpected login code or email, do not share it. Treat codes as secret keys.
Step 5 — Set Up Strong Security
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) in Settings → Security. Prefer an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy) over SMS where available.
- Set up a device PIN or biometric login (Face ID / fingerprint) for faster, secure access on mobile.
- Enable email and push notifications for account activity to monitor logins and trades.
An authenticator app reduces the risk of SIM-based attacks that can intercept SMS codes.
Step 6 — Lost Password or Can't Access Account
- On the login screen, click Forgot password?
- Enter your email; Robinhood will send instructions to reset your password.
- If you no longer control the email or phone on file, contact Robinhood Support via the app or the official website's help center. Expect identity verification steps.
Keep your recovery email and phone number up to date in account settings so recovery is smooth.
Step 7 — Best Practices & Safety Checklist
- Use a password manager to store complex passwords.
- Turn on 2FA and prefer authenticator apps to SMS.
- Never share login codes, passwords, or screenshots of your account with anyone.
- Beware of phishing emails—type the Robinhood address directly into your browser.
- Regularly review account activity and linked bank accounts.
If you need help beyond login (funding, trading, tax docs), the Robinhood Help Center and in-app chat can assist with account-specific issues.
